Connect with Allah Through His Names and Attributes
Press the button below to learn about Allah’s attributes
A couple of years ago, I had an idea and I created a reel about it, which surprisingly did really well as compared to any other content I have ever shared. The idea was about creating a system that helps you select a random name of Allah that you can then study. I love this idea because it not only has a surprise factor, but you can also make it personal by asking Allah to guide you to a name that you can resonate with during the current phase of your life. So I shared this idea where you have to write 1–99 numbers on paper, cut them individually, fold and store in a container. Then you can randomly select a folded piece of paper, unfold it to reveal the number and go to this website and see which attribute you have got and then study it. If you want to know about how you can study and reflect on the names of Allah, I have created a detailed post along with tips and resources to help you on this journey.
Importance on Reflecting on the Names of Allah
‘Allah has 99 names. Whoever memorizes and embraces these qualities will enter heaven.’ (Sahih Bukhari).
- Knowing the names and attributes of Allah helps us to improve our knowledge about who Allah is. It helps us to connect to our creator on a deeper level. The more we know Him, the more we will love Him and find comfort in worshipping Him.
- It is one of the obligatory acts that every practicing Muslim must fulfil. Knowing Allah allows us to properly worship Him in a way He truly deserves to be worshipped.
- Knowledge of names and attributes of Allah improves the quality of our prayers and strengthens our faith. It helps us to love Allah and fear Him, put our hope in His mercy and be sincere to Him through our actions.
‘The most beautiful names belong to Allah: so call on Him by them, but shun such men as use profanity in His names: for what they do, they will soon be requited.’ [Surah al-Araf, verse 180]
We must make the correct use of these names, and we must not apply the same attributes to any other than Allah (SWT).
Use these names to call upon the Creator in our prayers. Allah created us to worship Him. In order to worship Him properly, we must know Him.
‘The key to the call of the Messengers, the essence of their Message, is knowing Allah through His Names and Attributes and Deeds, because this is the foundation on which the rest of the Message, from beginning to end, is built.’ [Ibn al-Qayyim]
- Spending your time learning about Allah means doing what you were created for and ignoring it means neglecting the purpose of your life.
Knowledge of the Names of Allah is the basis for all other knowledge, as Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said:
Knowledge of the Most Beautiful Names of Allah is the basis of all other kinds of knowledge, for the objects of all these other branches of knowledge were either created or commanded by Him (the various branches of knowledge either deal with objects created by Him or with the laws and guidance revealed by Him). The reason for creation and guidance is found in His Most Beautiful Names (because He is the Creator, He creates things; because He is the Guide to the Straight Path, He reveals guidance, and so on) Knowing the Most Beautiful Names is the basis of all objects of knowledge, because all knowledge stems from these Names. [Badai’ al-Fawaaid by Ibn al-Qayyim, 1/163].
