How to Make the Most of Fridays (Jummah)

Friday is not just the end of the week; it is the best day of the week for a believer. It is a day filled with blessings, opportunities to earn rewards and moments to reconnect with Allah. When we understand the importance of Jummah through the Qur’an and Sunnah, we realize how simple acts can transform our Friday into a spiritually fulfilling day.

Abu Hurairah narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said:

“The best day that the sun has risen upon is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise, and on it, he was expelled from it. And the Hour will not be established except on Friday.”

Sunnah Acts To Do On Fridays

Take a Sunnah Bath (Ghusl)

It’s a way of honoring the day and preparing ourselves for the Jummah prayer.

Narrated Salman-Al-Farsi:

The Prophet (p.b.u.h) said, “Whoever takes a bath on Friday, purifies himself as much as he can, then uses his (hair) oil or perfumes himself with the scent of his house, then proceeds (for the Jumua prayer) and does not separate two persons sitting together (in the mosque), then prays as much as (Allah has) written for him and then remains silent while the Imam is delivering the Khutba, his sins in-between the present and the last Friday would be forgiven.”

Sahih al-Bukhari 883

Wear Clean Clothes and Apply Perfume

Jummah is like a weekly Eid. The Prophet ﷺ encouraged wearing the best clothes and applying perfume (for men). Even if you’re a woman at home spending Jummah alone, this act sets a beautiful spiritual tone for the day.

It was narrated from ‘Abdullah bin Salam that he heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) saying on the pulpit one Friday:

“There is nothing wrong with any one of you buying two garments for Friday (prayer), other than his daily work clothes.”
(Another chain) from Yusuf bin Abdullah bin Salam that his father said: “The Prophet delivered a sermon to us” and he mentioned that.

Recite Surah Al-Kahf

A simple yet powerful weekly habit to get your sins forgiven between two Fridays. If it’s difficult for you to recite it in one sitting, you can divide the Surah and recite it throughout the day. If you can’t recite the whole Surah due to some reason, try to recite at least the first 10 verses and/or listen to the recitation. Make it a goal to be consistent with this habit and with time, In Sha Allah, it will become easier for you.

Abū Sa’id reported the Prophet as saying,

“If anyone recites Surah al-Kahf on Friday, light will shine brightly for him till the next Friday.”
Baihaqī transmitted it in [Kitāb] al-Da‘awāt al-kabir, Mishkat al-Masabih 2175

Send Abundant Salawat (Durood) on Prophet ﷺ

As we all know, even a short salawat repeated with sincerity can bring immense blessings in our lives every day but on friday, those blessings are multiplied. Abud Darda’ reported God’s Messenger as saying,

“Invoke many blessings on me on Friday for it is witnessed. The angels are present on it, and no one will invoke a blessing on me without his blessing being submitted to me till he stops.” He said that he asked whether that applied also after his death, and he replied, “God has prohibited the earth from consuming the bodies of the prophets;” so God’s prophet is alive and given provision.
Ibn Majah transmitted it.

Make Dua During the Accepted Hour

There is a special hour on Friday during which all duas are accepted. Most scholars say this hour is likely between Asr and Maghrib. That means your late-afternoon supplications are especially powerful. Every friday, make it a habit to seclude yourself from distractions from Asar till Maghrib. Pray your Asar prayer and then make lots of duas till Maghrib. You can make a list of duas that you want to make so that you don’t miss something.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah’s Messenger (p.b.u.h) talked about Friday and said,

“There is an hour (opportune time) on Friday and if a Muslim gets it while praying and asks something from Allah, then Allah will definitely meet his demand.” And he (the Prophet) pointed out the shortness of that time with his hands.

Sahih al-Bukhari 935

Attend the Jumu’ah Prayer (for men)

The Prophet ﷺ warned:

“Let people stop neglecting Jumu’ah, or Allah will seal their hearts.”
(Sahih Muslim)

For men, attending the khutbah is obligatory. For women, attending is optional but listening to inspiring reminders, reading Quran, or spending time in dhikr fulfills the spirit of the day as well.

Take a Nap After Jummah (if needed)

If you are tired and need to take a nap, do so after praying Jummah. There are a few authentic ahadees where it’s mentioned that prophet ﷺ and His companions used to take a nap after Jummah prayer. Make sure to wake up for Asar so that you don’t miss the time between Asar and Maghrib when duas are answered.

Narrated Sahl: We used to offer the Jumua prayer with the Prophet (ﷺ) and then take the afternoon nap.

Sahih al-Bukhari 941

Practical Ways You Can Beautify Your Friday

Here are simple actions anyone can add to their Friday routine:

Start your morning with a calm, intentional mindset

Wake up early with the intention of making the most of the day, gathering as many rewards as you can. You can also start your day with Tahajjud for more Barakah. If you wake up feeling tired, make a small dua;

“Ya Allah, allow me to honor this blessed day.”

Do a small act of charity

Even feeding a bird, giving sadaqah online, or sharing a beneficial post is charity.

Cook something special for your family with the right intention

Turn your ordinary cooking into worship:

“Ya Allah, I’m doing this for Your sake, to serve my family.”

A small shift in intention brings big rewards.

Take a few minutes to reflect on Surah Al-Kahf

Along with recitation, if you have time try to reflect on a few verses of Surah Kahf and memorize them as well. Try to at least memorize the first 10 verses (for protection against dajjal).

Keep your tongue moist with dhikr

Especially:

  • SubhanAllah
  • Alhamdulillah
  • La ilaha illallah
  • Astaghfirullah
  • Allahumma salli ‘ala Muhammad

Friday is a weekly gift from Allah. A chance to restart, refresh, and reconnect. By following even a few Sunnah practices, we fill our hearts with peace and earn rewards that continue into the coming week.

If you’re trying to build a spiritual routine, start small.
One Sunnah at a time. One habit at a time.
And ask Allah to put barakah in your efforts.
