How to Reflect on Allah’s Names and Attributes

Gather Resources:

First step is to gather your resources that you will use to study the names and attributes of Allah. Make sure you choose authentic resources. These resources can be:

  • Books
  • Articles
  • Podcasts/Lectures etc
  • A notebook or a journal

You can buy books or download PDFs and print articles.

You can also save podcasts and lectures in a separate folder, either online or offline.

Make sure every resource is well organized so you don’t have to worry about anything.

You will also need a notebook or a journal for taking notes. You can also take notes digitally if that’s what you prefer.

Select a Name:

Once you are all set up for your reflection session, the next step is to select a name.

You can start from the very first name of Allah, or you can add a surprise factor as well. You can try the random name generator tool that I created based on an idea I got a few years back. It will generate a random name of Allah for you that you can then study and reflect on. Before clicking the button, make sure to say Bismillah and ask Allah to guide you to a name that you can resonate with in the current phase of your life. I find this method more fun. It’s similar to the idea of randomly opening up the Quran and coming across a verse that speaks to you. Give this method a try and let me know if you enjoy it.

Important Information About the Name:

After gathering resources and selecting an Allah name to reflect on, write some basic information about the name, including:

  • It’s meaning
  • Number of times it’s mentioned in the Quran
  • Root words
  • Variations (if any)
  • Similar Names
  • Connection between the similar names

Quranic Verses:

Once you have written all the basic information, write down some of the Quranic verses in which those names are mentioned. You can write every single verse in which that name or attribute is mentioned, or just select one or two verses.

Explanation or Significance:

Once you have read or listened to your preferred source of information, write down all the information that you learned about the name in your own words.

Reflection Questions:

Asking yourself some reflective questions will help you to get inspired and implement that attribute in your own life. It will help you to connect more with your Creator. You can ask yourself the following questions:

  • What did you learn from the name?
  • How did it inspire you?
  • How can you live by it?
  • How can you implement what you learned in your life?

Incorporate Allah’s Attributes in Duas

Finally, make a list of Duas that incorporate the selected attribute of Allah and call upon Allah with his names and attributes in your Duas.
